Things Just Might Change

Things Just Might Change

Zephaniah 3:14-17, New Living Translation

14
Sing, O daughter of Zion;
   shout aloud, O Israel!
Be glad and rejoice with all your heart,
   O daughter of Jerusalem!
15
For the Lord will remove his hand of judgment
and will disperse the armies of your enemy.
And the Lord himself, the King of Israel,
   will live among you!
At last your troubles will be over,
and you will never again fear disaster.
16
On that day the announcement to Jerusalem will be,
“Cheer up, Zion! Don’t be afraid!
17
For the Lord your God is living among you.
   He is a mighty savior.
He will take delight in you with gladness.
With his love, he will calm all your fears.[a]
He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”

Sermonic Moves:  Zephaniah’s 8th Oracle

  1. Sometimes the sorrow of one season can turn into a song within the next - “Things Just Might Change.”
  2. The faithfulness of GOD’s presence provides the people of GOD with the hope that even the worst of seasons can shift - GOD’s presence is the factor that allows divine judgement to also become a location of divine restoration.  GOD is a GOD of both and not just either or; we can reap for wrong and be restored through mercy within the same season.
  3. As long as GOD is living among GOD’s people- GOD is with us, “Emmanuel,” The People of GOD can hope for:
  • Salvation from GOD
  • Delight from GOD
  • Love from GOD
  • A Song from GOD - a song which turns divine judgement into divine visitation.
