A Worthwhile Risk

A Worthwhile Risk

Matthew 28:16-18, New American Bible (Revised Edition)

16 The elevendisciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. 18 Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
  • We have to trust the words of Jesus without proof of their immediate validity. A faith walk is not one of immediate gratification, but it often one of deferred revelation; we will understand it better by and by. The question for us is similar to the question the text asks of the Disciples, are we willing to go to the mountain and see what's next?
  • We have to rest in the tension that worship and doubt (little faith) can be a reality for the believer; the challenge is to stay on the mountain. Even when our feelings are conflicted - again, as we preached last week, can we give space to both joy and fear and worship and doubt.
  • Both doubt and devotion are subject to both the approach and authority of Jesus - Jesus’s agenda transcends our temperamental and temporary response. Whether we are devoted or struggling with doubt, all authority belongs to Jesus!
